From www.lifescrip.com I've been searching for fertility related news bytes. There are many subjects that are important for women's health, yet, I'm unsure how directly related they are to having a baby. The following byte is related to delivery, so I think that I'm safe with that! For all of you that are pregnant at this time and planning your birth plan, as per Coley's posts last week, this may be of interest to you!
Now, this really seems like common sense. I would think that gravity would have something to do with the pain relief, but then, I wonder why the timeframe for both types of deliveries was so similar? The kneeling births were longer compared to the traditional position, only by a few minutes, but I would have thought that they would have required less time. I'm wondering if maybe the discrepancy is due to the medical staff in dealing with this type of birth?
I can't personally attest to this type of birth, since I had a c-section and was asking for my epidural before I even went into labor. Yes, I'm a wuss when it comes to pain!
Delivery Less Painful when Kneeling
The traditional hospital delivery position may be making labor unnecessarily painful and strenuous for pregnant women, an innovative new study finds. Published in the International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the study finds that pregnant women who deliver their babies in a kneeling position experienced significantly less pain than women who delivered in the more common sitting-upright position. Researchers suggested that the kneeling position may divert some of the pressure that labor creates on the spine and lower back. Average delivery time for kneeling births was 48.5 minutes, only slightly higher than the average delivery time of 41 minutes for upright-seated births.
