Looking into the book,
Do Blue Bedsheets Bring Babies by Thomas Chraughwell I saw that there were many old wive's tales regarding sex drive, fertility and pregnancy. Most of them I felt were pretty easy to know if they was any truth behind them, but some were surprizes. Here are some of both!
The following things are rumored to be aphrodisiacs in folk lore, but what does the FDA say?
Oysters - yes! They are high in zinc, and zinc improves the sex drive.
Yohimbine bark - "encouraging". Rumored to activate nerve centers in males to improve sexual function.
The main emphasis on this subject in the book was for
powdered rhinoceros horn and
tongkat ali, a wild plant in Indonesia. I actually hadn't heard of either of these things. The powdered rhinoceros horn was not found to have any significan effect on virility. Tongkat ali was a different story though. According to a study done by Dr. Ismail Tambi of the Human Reproduction Specialist Centre at Malaysia's National Population and Family Development Board testosterone levels in the males involved in the study doubled after 3 weeks of taking the plant. The males involved were aged 31-52 and all of the subjects reported significant improvement in their sexual function. In a separate Malaysian study, tongkat ali extract was found to lower body fat, increased muscle strength and increased muscle mass.
Ending this report on aphrodisiacs though, I thought was something very important to remember about sex drive.
John Renner, founder of the Consumer Health Information Research Institute believes the effectiveness of aphrodisiacs is all in our heads. "The mind is the most potent aphrodisiac there is," he said. "It's very difficult to evaluate something someone is taking because if you tell them it's an aphrodisiac, the hope of a certain response might actually lead to an additional sexual response."
